Contracts

So often I here an employer say their employees don’t have contracts. In fact they do but they haven’t been set out in writing. If an employee is to be employed for more than one month he must be given in writing certain information about the terms of his employment. In addition they must be provided with a disciplinary and grievance procedure which takes account of the statutory procedures all employers must follow.

All employees in the England have two sets of rights: contractual rights and statutory rights. The general principles of contract law apply but the employee’s statutory rights will modify the agreement between the employer and employee.

It is therefore important to get these documents in place. They say good fences make good neighbours; good contracts can do the same for your employees.
